History of RCA
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
A Legacy of Firsts: The Story of Roosevelt Children’s Academy Charter School
In the year 2000, at a time when the concept of charter schools was still new to New York State, a bold and visionary educational experiment took root in the heart of Roosevelt, Long Island. Roosevelt Children’s Academy Charter School (RCA) opened its doors as the first charter school on Long Island, ushering in a new era of public education driven by innovation, accountability, and opportunity.
RCA was founded with a singular mission: to provide a high-quality, tuition-free public education in a nurturing environment where children would be challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their fullest potential. At a time when many students in Roosevelt faced educational inequities and limited choices, RCA stood out as a beacon of hope and excellence.
Laying the Foundation
From the outset, RCA embraced a strong focus on literacy, early intervention, and a whole-child approach to education. The school’s early years were marked by dedicated educators, small class sizes, and a curriculum designed to develop strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. RCA also stood apart for its inclusive culture—welcoming students of all backgrounds and abilities—and for its deep partnerships with families and the surrounding community.
As the school grew in enrollment and reputation, it remained committed to its core values: academic rigor, individualized support, enrichment beyond the classroom, and character development. Over the decades, RCA has consistently met and exceeded state expectations, proving that high standards and caring relationships can transform student outcomes.
Expanding Opportunity: A New Chapter
The school’s steady growth and success culminated in a major milestone in February 2025, with the grand opening of a brand-new school building—purpose-built to reflect the next chapter in RCA’s history. This state-of-the-art facility expands RCA’s capacity to serve more students and offers modern learning spaces designed for collaboration, creativity, and 21st-century learning.
The new campus symbolizes the progress of a school that began with a pioneering spirit and continues to evolve without losing sight of its founding mission.
Why RCA Still Leads
